Poteat Residence Hall
Poteat Residence Hall, an original Reynolda Campus building dedicated in 1955 and renovated most recently in 2017, is named for William Louis Poteat (1877, AM 1889), Wake Forest College’s president from 1905-27. Poteat is widely credited with being the first college instructor in the South to teach science disciplines in a laboratory setting. His belief in evolution and willingness to teach it to his classes preceded any other known defender of the controversy in the region by approximately 15 years. The grapes and fleur-de-lis in the crest are drawn from the Poteat family coat of arms.
